The magic of Merlin appeared in my parents kitchen a couple of weeks ago. My two youngest cousins, visiting from south of the river, were transformed into apprentice wizards. A couple of science tricks with mentos and cola and the donning of magical wizard cloaks (handmade by my mum) transported the boys into a fantasy world where anything could happen. They lapped it all up. They did not take the cloaks off, much to the hotel staff's amusement at breakfast the next day.
The power of those cloaks should not be underestimated. The psychology of how we dress and the effect on our mood is well researched. The dreaded hospital gown makes us feel vulnerable - ill-fitting and flapping open at a moments disgrace. A cocktail dress, on the other hand, can put a smile on our face and a spring in our step. Maybe I should have donned my old ball dresses to chemo.
One item of clothing, that has the message to make us feel a little bit stronger, a little bit calmer, can help us face the day with a little bit more confidence.
